ROOT-CANAL-TREATED TEETH

A Biologic Perspective

ON ROOT - CANAL - TREATED TEETH

People smiling, heads leaning together

At Biohax, we approach dentistry through a biologic lens. We pay close attention to chronic oral infection, inflammation, dental materials, the oral microbiome, and the relationship between oral and overall health.

A root-canal decision can be irreversible. That's exactly why our biologic philosophy starts with real investigation, so you understand what we find, and we choose the best path forward together

History
01.History

Why are you here? What has happened with this tooth? What symptoms or concerns brought you in?

Clinical Examination
02.Clinical Examination

Evaluate the tooth and surrounding tissues using appropriate clinical testing.

Imaging
03.Imaging

Review conventional imaging and use CBCT when clinically appropriate and when it may change diagnosis or treatment planning..

What a Flat X-Ray Can Miss

2D X-ray gives us one part of the picture. When clinically appropriate, CBCT can help us evaluate the anatomy in greater detail.

CBCT scanner for 3D imaging in the practice

CBCT (3D imaging)

Builds a full 3D picture of the tooth and jaw, revealing cavitations and infection sites a flat X-ray was never designed to show.

DNA PCR Testing

PCR analysis identifies which targeted microorganisms are present in the submitted sample.

Rapid and accurate molecular diagnostics

What Can PCR

Analysis Show?

The result doesn't make the treatment decision for us. We interpret it alongside the clinical examination, imaging, symptoms, history, and patient's goals.

Microbial DNA detected
Organisms identified in the submitted sample
Sample/site identification
Laboratory-reported microbial findings

How it Actually Works?

Step-by-Step Breakdown

PCR findings are one piece of the clinical picture and are interpreted alongside the patient's history, clinical examination, and imaging.

0.1 Floss Sample

0.1 Floss Sample

Sample collected from around the tooth and gumline.

0.2 PCR Test

0.2 PCR Test

PCR copies microbial DNA until it becomes detectable.

0.3 Micro Findings

0.3 Micro Findings

Shows which targeted DNA was detected, not whether it's still active.

0.4 Extraction

(if chosen)
0.4 Extraction

An extracted tooth can be tested the same way. Same process, different sample source.

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER REGARDING PCR FINDINGS:

PCR findings are one piece of the clinical picture and are interpreted alongside the patient's history, clinical examination, and imaging.
PCR testing does not, by itself, establish or prove that a particular tooth caused a systemic medical condition (such as fatigue, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease, etc.). Its purpose is to provide objective data to facilitate an informed conversation regarding your options.

What Patients Ask Us First

Answered plainly

No. We evaluate the individual tooth and patient. Extraction is irreversible, so recommendations should follow an appropriate evaluation and discussion of the findings, risks, benefits, and alternatives.

No. Biohax is a biologically focused practice and does not perform root canal therapy or endodontic retreatment. Patients who want to pursue those options can seek evaluation from an endodontist or another provider.

PCR testing detects microbial genetic material in the submitted sample. Results are considered together with the patient's clinical findings and imaging.

PCR can provide information about microbial DNA detected in the submitted sample. It does not, by itself, establish that a particular tooth caused a systemic medical condition.

A 2D X-ray is one part of the diagnostic picture. Depending on the patient's history, examination, and existing imaging, additional evaluation or CBCT may sometimes be appropriate.

No. CBCT should be used when clinically appropriate and when the additional three-dimensional information may influence diagnosis or treatment planning.

That's your decision. We'll explain our findings and recommendation. Patients who wish to explore endodontic retreatment or another tooth-preserving option may seek evaluation from an appropriate provider.

Absolutely. An irreversible treatment decision should be one the patient understands and feels comfortable making.
